Benefit(s): This is the posture used at the beginning of Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations) and holds many benefits although it may appear as an “easy” pose. It is a very grounding pose, connecting you to the earth while also keeping your energy circulating within and throughout the body. Palms are coming together to complete the circuit as energy flows up from the ground. Physically this pose increases strength in the knees, thighs, ankles and back while also improving balance and digestion. It is also a great pose for alleviating sciatica and regulating the nervous and respiratory systems.

Contraindication(s): There are little contraindications with this pose, however, caution should be used for those suffering from insomnia, headaches and low blood pressure.

Instructions:

  1. Come to stand with the feet just about hip width distance apart.
  2. Ensure the shoulders are inline over the hips and that the pelvis is tucked rather than sticking out behind the body.
  3. Draw the crown towards the ceiling lengthening the spine as you draw the tailbone towards the floor.
  4. Hands come together at heart center, paying close attention to how this feels as both palms connect.
  5. Apply light pressure between the palms and notice how this feels in the fingers, finger tips and wrists.
  6. Finally, close your eyes and reflect on the breath. Notice the silence between the breaths. Connect to the stillness between the breaths. Draw this stillness into your pose.
