What Is Inositol?
Inositol – while once considered a member of the vitamin B family (vitamin B8) – is a naturally occurring compound created by the human body. It is one of the most versatile nutrients in the body, promoting vital functions including brain health, hormonal health, mental wellness, sleep, and so much more.
Inositol and Mental Health
When in balance, inositol regulates several key players in the body - particularly the brain. With regards to mental health, inositol plays two key roles:
Because of these roles, inositol has been shown to be effective for managing depression as well as both anxiety and panic disorders. Doctors are beginning to recommend inositol in replacement of serotonin-boosting drugs (ie. SSRIs), which are often used to combat symptoms of depression and various anxiety disorders. It is particularly popular due to its lack of negative side effects, which can sometimes occur with SSRI drugs.
However, in order to complete these roles effectively, inositol levels must be balanced. Levels that are too low might result in problems with anxiety and hormones. Levels that are too high may trigger mental illnesses such as mania or psychosis.
Foods High in Inositol
As we mentioned, inositol is a naturally occurring substance, which means it can also be found in the foods we eat. The following foods contain high levels of inositol:
As with any new supplement routine, be sure to consult your doctor prior to implementing inositol into your routine and follow recommended dosage closely.
