How Your Sun Sign Influences Stress Management
When stress hits, it can be difficult to handle it gracefully. And we all handle it differently. Some of these differences arise as a result of experiences. But that's not the only thing contributing to our unique coping strategies.

When stress hits, it can be difficult to handle it gracefully. This is true no matter how much experience you have with it. The best way to cope with stress is often different from one person to the next. Some of these differences arise as a result of experiences we have endured. But what about our innate reactions to stress? Those automatic tendencies or reactions when times get tough. Where do these come from?

What if we told you your astrological sun sign may have something to do with it?

“A little direction from the stars can go a long way”

- Unknown

Sun sign is likely the most well-known form of astrology, as it is relatively simple to determine and provides a big-picture representation of your personality and core-beliefs. To calculate, you require only the month and day you were born. With this information, you are then placed within one of the twelve zodiac signs. These signs include:

  1. Aquarius: January 21 February 18th
  2. Pisces: February 19th  March 20th
  3. Aries: March 21st – April 20th
  4. Taurus: April 21st – May 21st
  5. Gemini: May 22nd – June 21st
  6. Cancer: June 22nd – July 22nd
  7. Leo: July 23rd – August 23rd
  8. Virgo: August 24th – September 22nd
  9. Libra: September 23rd – October 23rd
  10. Scorpio: October 24th November 22nd
  11. Sagittarius: November 23rd – December 21st
  12. Capricorn: December 22nd  January 20th

There is an infinite wealth of knowledge that can be gained from astrology – particularly if you wish to increase self-awareness. Below, we explore the relationship between your zodiac sign and stress.

Aquarius

Procrastination is a problem for an Aquarius. Their highly optimistic personality often causes them to be too focused on a “there’s always tomorrow” attitude, and less focused on the present. However, their love of living in the future allows them to think differently than others, always pushing the envelope.

Unfortunately, this means deadlines are not their strong suit, and when they feel cornered or trapped, anxiety and stress are likely to set in. Luckily, they are never afraid to reach out to as many people as possible for advice.

Despite their social nature, it is not uncommon for an Aquarius to feel emotionally isolated at times, feeling as though nobody truly understands what they’re going through. To combat these feelings, they are encouraged to meet new people and try to step outside of their comfort zone. It may be surprising what value the advice from a complete stranger can bring. And to put less focus on tomorrow and more on today, grounding and mindfulness techniques are a wonderful activity for an Aquarius. These could include hot epsom salt baths, baking, or mindfulness activities such as progressive muscle relaxation technique, as these will all encourage a present mindset.

Pisces

Pisces are incredibly intuitive and self-aware. They are never one to let emotions build up. They prioritize the importance of removing themselves from whatever is causing them stress/anxiety. This allows them to disassociate themselves from the situation and get to the root of an emotion as quickly as possible.

Pisces are also incredibly empathetic people, perhaps because they themselves feel emotions so deeply. They are always prepared to put the needs of others ahead of their own, sacrificing whatever is necessary for those they care for. Because they live to give and receive emotional connection and support, when others do not share the same values it can be quite defeating.

Remember, although being an empathetic person is a wonderful quality to have, it also means you are more susceptible to absorbing the energy of others. When this is positive energy, this is a blessing. However, more often than not, people are turning to you for support during times of trouble. This makes you no stranger to sickness or feeling lethargic and tired. Eating well, prioritizing sleep and drinking enough water are three ways to keep yourself energized and healthy. Quality time with yourself is an excellent self-care for a Pisces. Because sometimes, you have to say “no” to others so you can say “yes” to yourself, and yes to them the next time.

Aries

Aries’ are fiercely independent – and oftentimes - private people. Their first instincts when anxiety or stress strikes is to mask it so others can’t tell what’s really going on. This comes from their desire to get things done in their own way.

Unfortunately, keeping things inside means their stress builds up and often manifests physically – which can look like nail biting, legs shaking, or most commonly, tension headaches.

Aries are encouraged to address emotions more proactively to avoid them building up. Take time to unwind whenever possible and to choose self-care activities that target the mind and body equally. Example activities could include yoga, massage therapy, or walks in nature to avoid headaches.

Taurus

For a Taurus, stress arises when time is not on their side. They prefer to take their time and work methodically, and strongly dislike feeling rushed. When a threat is perceived (whether real or not), the insecurities of a Taurus can become overwhelming. When stress arises, they seek comfort from non-social distractions (ie. food, tv, sleeping).

Taurus’ are encouraged to place strong focus on organization and time-management whenever possible. This includes self-care activities. While it may seem counterintuitive to ‘add more’ to your plate, self-care is non-negotiable. When engaging in self-care activities, a Taurus should focus on how they can optimize the time available to unwind.  Something that allows them to engage their logical mind but doesn’t add more pressure to their schedule. For example, going to bed (or waking up) 20 minutes earlier than normal, freeing up time to read a book/magazine/newspaper. Or during the daily commute, listen to a podcast or playlist.

Gemini

Gemini’s are multi-taskers and true go-getters. Tapping into their ‘twin’ symbol – they often find themselves taking on too many tasks at once, as if they can do the job of two people. Because of this, it is not uncommon for them to internalize their stress, trying to ignore it the best they can so it does not interfere with the tasks at hand.

Unfortunately, similarly to everyone else, eventually this stress becomes too much. When the inner turmoil takes its toll, Gemini’s may take this stress out on others by shutting people out or lashing out. It may be noticeable when a Gemini is stressed, as it is not uncommon for them to pace around the room or listen to loud music as a distraction.

Gemini’s are encouraged to reduce their stress by engaging in fun activities like board games or cards. Prefer to be on your own? Try listening to calming music, getting lost in a good book, or meditating.

Cancer

As a sensitive sign, anxiety weighs heavily on the psyche of a Cancer; experiencing emotions deeply and whole-heartedly. As such, ignoring the signs that something is wrong is usually not a problem for Cancers. The question is whether they are willing to work through it right away or let the emotions overwhelm them.

Cancers are a crab symbol for a reason – utilizing their shell whenever they need to hide from the world. When used in moderation, solitude is quite beneficial for Cancers, providing the space to tap into their introspective tendencies. The concern arises when this comfort is overused, as Cancers are prone to concealing their fears and anxiety within.

Cancers develop strong intuition, making them quite skilled at going with their gut. Not so ironically though, gut issues such as acid reflux or digestion issues are common amongst Cancers, which can only further anxious thoughts.

Cancers are encouraged to utilize their alone time for self-care activities such as colouring, cooking or engaging in DIY projects at home. They may also find comfort in channelling their introspective energy into mindfulness activities, such as journaling or meditation. And of course, Cancers should try and reach out whenever they need support – they can’t keep everything inside that shell of theirs.

Leo

Leo’s have the heart of a lion. They experience intense emotion, are protective of others and care deeply. This means they experience deeper heartache than most other signs. They are good at putting on a brave face but prefer to deal with tension as it happens. If they put it off for too long, stress often creates physical symptoms, including crying, lethargy and fatigue or perhaps even nausea.

A Leo’s natural self-confidence allows them to work well under pressure, putting things into perspective whenever possible, and finding humour in any situation to help negate stress. This does not mean they don’t experience stress along the way.

Leo’s are encouraged to embrace their emotional predisposition. Self-care for a Leo could be allowing yourself to cry, learning to meditate, dancing it out, or even establishing a weekly venting session.

Virgo

Many Virgos are perfectionists, extremely knowledgeable, hyper-focused and independent. They prefer to fix their own problems, which means they don’t always accept the help of others.

They can be highly self-critical as well, which creates high levels of stress when things go array because they prefer things to be ‘just so’. Virgos are also more prone to stomach irritations, particularly when they do not get enough relaxation.

With this in mind, Virgos are encouraged to find tranquil environments to re-center themselves. If possible, try and find somewhere outside of the normal routine that provides tranquility. This could be a cozy café nearby, a park bench with a beautiful view, or even a bathtub (don’t forget the Epsom salts and maybe even some calming essential oils such as lavender).

Libra

Libra’s love balance. When it’s lost, stress and anxiety can be overwhelming. As a sign that is ruled by the renal system (ie. kidneys and bladder), nutritional balance is of utmost importance. Thankfully, they are also extremely self-aware – knowing when their physical or mental health is suffering or if their emotional energy is out of whack.

That said, they may know when something is wrong, but they don’t always know how to fix it. Luckily, they are always prepared to find the answers to restore their equilibrium. As someone who truly values the wisdom of others, they seek advice, particularly from those in their close circle.

Libra’s are also creative by nature. Self-care for a Libra could come in the form of anything that engages their creative mind. They may also find that nature holds a special connection with them, so perhaps forest bathing or outdoor yoga may bring some balance. And of course - nutritional self-care to maintain physical and emotional balance.

Scorpio

Scorpios are highly sensitive signs but dislike people knowing it. To keep their stress hidden, they typically wait as long as possible before addressing the problem at hand. These innate instincts push them away from wanting to talk to others about hardships or anxiety.

Yet, a part of them also gets upset when friends don’t pick up the signs that they are struggling, or know why they’re stressed. If this is the case, it’s important for Scorpios to remind themselves that it can’t work both ways.

Scorpios are encouraged to share their feelings sooner – with themselves and others. This can be done through meditation, journaling about your feelings, or leaning on the support system around you when you need them, even if it’s just to hangout. There is nothing to be ashamed about. There is strength in sharing, not weakness.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius’ are known for being over the top. While they just love to have fun, this can sometimes get them into trouble. Overdoing themselves and overcommitting are two of the things they seem to struggle to balance. While things often work out, they are no stranger to jumping into something without a solid plan in place.

When serious or stressful situations occur, their initial reaction may be to resort to humour. They often find comfort through social gatherings, although it’s uncommon for them to open up about their stress. Sagittarius’ prefer to wait and sort through their feelings on their own. This means stress weighs heavily on them, often creating tension in their neck and back. Sagittarius’ should use this tension as a sign that it’s time to slow down and to focus on yourself.

Sagittarius also love truth and knowledge. Why not use this passion to explore new tips and techniques to better understand and manage the sources of stress in your life! Mindfulness and meditation are two perfect ways to do this. Plus, a Saggitarius’ love of travel and exploration is an excellent reason to take a mini getaway and really focus on self-love and self-awareness.

Capricorn

Of all the signs, Capricorn is the most renowned for managing stress. While anxiety and nervousness may strike them initially, they take pride in their ability to continue working through the pressure. They often see stress as a fact of life, appreciating their ability to remain grounded and self-sufficient during the hard times. This may come from their hard-working and driven personality. While admirable, it’s important to remember that none of us can do everything on our own. We all need to reach out for help from time to time; even a Capricorn!

Be cautious not to skip over self-reflection and exploration. A Capricorn’s ability to work through stress makes them less likely to reflect on why they are stressed in the first place. Try incorporating exercise or working with your hands into the self-care routine. Gardening or yard work perhaps!
