There’s always been something special about lacing up the skates and playing some “shinny” with your friends on a frozen lake or pond. This pastime is emblematic of Canadian life, with such great reasoning why it is unique and important to us. Here are just a few reasons to grab your skates & friends and head for the ice:
Stress-Free Sport
On the pond, there are no rules, regulations or authorities to govern the game. These factors can sometimes deter players, especially younger ones, from continuing to play. Pond hockey is therefore a great opportunity to develop a true passion for hockey and enjoy it for the camaraderie and teamwork that it was founded upon.
Low to Zero Cost
Pond hockey is an accessible sport that everyone, no matter your socioeconomic status, can participate in. There are no ice rental fees or usually too much of a distance to travel to find a frozen surface. Many programs, such as Skate to Great and Restore Sports, offer the opportunity for those wanting to participate to receive donated equipment, meaning there is no cost barrier to play.
Unstructured Play
Commonly organized in a spontaneous manner with neighbours, friends and family, it is no wonder why so many people enjoy playing! Pond hockey is all about having fun, sharing some laughs and being with those that the mean the most to you. Just as much as playing in a league, unstructured pond hockey is just as supportive, nurturing and productive too.
Exercise Without Pressure
On average, players spend more time practicing and playing hockey while on a pond compared to when on a modern indoor rink. As mentioned in my previous article, this can be explained by the fact that outdoor activities are generally perceived as more enjoyable than the same activity performed indoors. Pond hockey can therefore help you maintain an active lifestyle and guide you to being healthy, both mentally and physically.
Enjoy the “Great Outdoors”
Pond hockey brings the game back to where it was born! Played on an all-natural ice rink, pond hockey allows you to enjoy beautiful surroundings and get a breath of fresh air. This time spent outside has many mental health benefits and might be just what you need after a day amongst the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
