Cam's Kids all started after the tragic loss of Cameron Hicks, an Uxbridge local who struggled immensely with anxiety during his high school years. When his anxiety first set in, his parents "had no idea what they were dealing with". They were unsure of the resources or coping techniques available to them which could help people like Cameron cope with his anxiety. This is why we are absolutely thrilled to learn about the new Well-Being and Mental Health Strategic Plan that has been implemented at the Durham District School Board (DDSB) - the very board that governed Cameron's public and high schools.
As a part of this new plan, the DDSB invited several well-being and mental health focused resources from the community, to gather together on Wednesday May 8th to educate high school students on how they can help! In order to educate every school across the region, the DDSB invited 4 students from each high school to partake in this event, where they can then return to their schools and share the knowledge gained.
Cam's Kids was honoured to be included in the list of fantastic resources that attended this event, which took place at the DDSB Headquarters. We could not be more excited about the steps the DDSB are taking to make mental health a priority and to ensure the conversations are being had; without judgement or shame.
Thank you to all the students, parents and educators that visited our booth. We hope to expand our outreach to your school in the near future.
Thank you to Steffanie at the DDSB for including us in this important event.
