On Tuesday February 27th, the Uxbridge Youth Centre, in collaboration with Cam’s Kids, hosted a Mental Wellness session, funded in part by Ontario Trillium Foundation. The session was geared towards grade 7 & 8 students from Uxbridge Public School to teach them about stress and anxiety, and healthy ways of dealing with it.
Dr. Lynne, ND from True Roots Healthcare was one of two speakers at the session. Dr. Lynne created a stress and anxiety rescue kit for the students and coached them through the physiology of stress and anxiety, healthy habits, and who to talk to, if stress and anxiety starts to become a regular occurrence. The rescue kits, which students were able to take home, included a USB with breathing exercises, a stress ball (generously donated from Canadian Tire) and a booklet that included self-reflection pages, space to journal and write down worries/concerns, colouring pages, and many other mindful activities.
Catherine Tobin, the second speaker, is an emotional success coach and taught the students Emotional Freedom Technique. EFT consists of tapping on specific meridian points in the body while talking through feelings of stress/anxiety. This practice has been scientifically proven to help relieve and release these worries from the mind and body. Catherine guided the students through multiple rounds of EFT until they were comfortable enough to be able to incorporate it into their daily routines, if the need arises. Many thanks to Dale, Program Coordinator at the Uxbridge Youth Centre, for organizing this informative session. We are looking forward to more of these Mental Wellness sessions with Joseph Gould PS and Uxbridge Secondary School. Cam’s Kids is thrilled to help facilitate mental wellness information sessions within the Uxbridge community and beyond.
The next Youth Centre Wellness Session will be held on Friday March 23rd and April 6th. We are looking forward to providing the same informative session to more students!
